Volunteers

Volunteers are a critical part of the Special Olympic program and Area M is no exception.  Volunteers vary in age and background and everyone has something to offer.  The surprise comes when the volunteers find that they get so much back from the time they give program.  “How can you not feel better when the smallest athlete in the race finishes last; with her arms in the air, a smile on her face, and the words ‘I did it!’ the first thing she says!  It makes you feel incredible,” said one volunteer.  And everyone you talk to agrees. 

Area M is always looking for volunteers to help with our programs.  Many sports needs coaches, athletic events require lots of volunteers, and fund-raising support is also needed.  All volunteers who have contact with athletes are required to complete a Police Records Check for the safety of the athletes.

Act 34 - Police Records Check (If you have completed this process within the last 2 years, you may submit it.)
If you are a head coach, Unified Sports® Partner, or plan on traveling overnight with athletes  in any capacity (e.g. competitions, presentations, special events), you MUST complete the Police Records Check (ACT 34) every two years. Send it along with the application fee to the PA State Police address listed on the form. Upon receipt of a clean record from the State Police, you will be able to chaperone athletes overnight. While only those meeting the travel/chaperone requirement are required to submit this form, all coaches and volunteers are encouraged to complete this process.

Athletes

Special Olympics athletes are required to have current participation and medical forms on file and with them when competing in Special Olympic Events.  Coaches will collect forms when practice begins and updated medical forms must be turned in before athletes are permitted to participate in competitions.
