Global Messengers:
In Special Olympics we believe if we can open one heart and change one mind, we can make a difference. Global Messengers are helping to shed light on the dignity of people with intellectual disabilities and show our community how they not only participate in Special Olympics, but they hold jobs, attend school and volunteer in the communities they live and work in.
Global Messengers are athletes who attend training on Public Speaking. They have a Speech Coach who works with the athlete on making their speeches for the audience they will be talking with. They are given many wonderful opportunities to spread the word about a program that is very near and dear to their hearts.
Athlete Leadership Team:
Special Olympics is all about our Athletes. We strive very hard to always have our Mission the first concern of our program. The program is about the athlete, for the athlete and why there is a program.
The members of the Athlete Leadership Team are the liaisons between our athlete base and the Management Team Leaders of our program. They represent their fellow athletes cares and concerns and help the Management Team stay focused on what is important to the Athletes.
Athlete Leadership Teams has a positive impact on our program. In Area M, a team of 20 Athletes and 2 Coach/Advisors comprise the team. They meet monthly and discuss many various topics. They discuss Leadership, and the qualities a good leader needs to have. Special guest from our community are invited in to speak with our Leadership Team and share their leadership stories with them.

The Leadership Team does various Community Service activities. We try to show our community how much we appreciate what they do to help Special Olympics, by giving back to others and helping with many special projects.

Social Events:
Special Olympics Area M hosts various social events throughout the year. The social events give the athletes the opportunity to get together, make friends and have a good time off the field.

Dances:
Area M has four dances every year. In February we give all the love birds a chance to get together with their sweethearts for the Valentines Dance. At the end of May we have the summer games send off dance where we all get together and party to wish all the Penn State bound athletes good luck at Summer Games. October brings out all the goblins and vampires for the Halloween Dance. We have a parade of costumes and give out lots of prizes for the best costumes. The last dance of the year is the Christmas Dance. This dance is a little more laid back with a full dinner and a visit from Santa Claus.

Picnic:
Every year Area M has a picnic at Village Park in Carlisle. The picnic is usually the third Saturday in August and everyone brings a covered dish. We have lots of activities like, Bocce, Volleyball, and of course the Softball game.

GALA:
Area M hosts awards Gala in October. This Gala gives the athletes the opportunity to get all dressed up and join their friends and family for a nice dinner, awards ceremony and dancing. Every sport will honor both the outstanding and the most improved athlete of the year at this Gala.
Shop till you Drop:
If you don’t have anything to wear we also have a shop till you drop night where the girls can come and try on dresses and if they find something they like they take it with them free of charge.
